The Best Cafes In Chicago

By Chicago Bucket List

The best part of waking up is… five cups of coffee and a pastry to-go, please. ☕️

Published January 20, 2020

Hello, darkness, our oldest friend - dark roast coffee, that is. There's one thing you don't mess with - our morning, afternoon, (and in desperate, times) night caffeine fix. A cup of coffee can say a lot about your day, so it's vital to get it right.

For Instance: Cortado with an extra shot of espresso, for the times you ran into the train as the doors were closing - and you're feeling lucky. The wet cappuccino because you really need a hug, and a personal day. An espresso shot, à la carte, when you just want that extra punch to your morning. And a personal favorite, the espresso martini, because we are classy adults who don't drink Redbull vodkas any longer.

Judge one not solely by the coffee produced but by the pastries supplied. We would be doing a disservice to our readers if we didn’t scream to the world about the sweets selection at Loba. They seek to experiment with their pastries finding funky flavors and textures (i.e. sourdough croissants), and we want every part of it. So, grab a spot next to the fiddle plant and enjoy your carbs in peace.

The other day we dreamt of Spanish tiles, pistachio-milk lattes, and Turkish delights. Okay, it wasn’t a dream, but it may feel like one walking into Ormo. This health-forward cafe is innovating the coffee culture throughout Chicago. With vegan-friendly recipes extending from their brews to the food, their Turkish coffee is just the cherry on top. Bottoms up!

From the restaurant group that brought you Au Cheval and Gilt Bar comes some of the best latte art you’ll lay your eyes on. This retro Tokyo-inspired cafe is the product of acclaimed latte artist, Hirochi Sawafa, who’s brand looms throughout the cafe. Personality radiates with his self-portrait hanging above the bar, gallery-style lighting, and skateboard wall decor. We wish we were as cool.

One has not lived until they’ve gotten sufficiently hooked on Vietnamese iced coffee. A close relative to rocket fuel and a distant cousin from the Turkish espresso, comes the Vietnamese coffee. Cà Phê Dá has perfected the authentic taste and feel of the brew, which takes flavorful espresso beans from SE Asia and mixes it with condensed milk. Voila! You’ll never be the same.

When we say pinkie up, we mean it. There isn't a shortage of glitz nor glamour when it comes to Soho House, and The Allis is no exception. Filled with the floor to ceiling windows, chandeliers, and a coffee bar - you'll feel like royalty sitting atop your velour loveseat sipping your caffeinated beverage.

Pro Tip: Come in and enjoy afternoon tea complete with finger sandwiches, scones, and mini cakes daily from 2-4PM. Cheers to the English siesta!

What feels a bit like lounging in Martha Stewart's kitchen (minus Snoop Dog) comes a cafe that will feed your vitamin D levels. Nestled on the University of Chicago’s campus, this space drowns in natural sunlight, reinforcing the French name Plein Air, meaning, “in the open air.” During the summer their spacious patio is the perfect excuse to get "work" done.

We'd like a black coffee with a hint of smoothe jazz on the side. Housing international coffees alongside a collection of records, spend your morning browsing beans and beats at Purple Llama. Keep an eye out for special bundles to purchase - pairing the perfect coffee blends to a musical record you can take home. Go on, let your foot tap to the sweet sound of blues as you wait for your coffee press at home.

Everything Hogsalt touches, turns to gold.. Yet another retro-chic cafe, lined with wood paneling and coffee addicts. If we were to throw together a mood board for this space, we’d get a mix of Eric Forman’s basement from that 70’s Show, log cabin vibes, and a fern paradise.

Cigar aficionados welcomed with a curated selection of smokes; enjoy available Doughnut Vault pastries for the weak-willed; and spiked hot drinks perfect for Chiberia  stragglers. (Editor's note: do not mistake boozy steamers for regular coffee.)
