9 Things You Didn't Know You Can Do At The Starbucks Reserve

By New York Bucket List

Coffee tastings, espresso martinis, & more ☕️

Published September 23, 2020

Located in the heart of Meatpacking and steps from Chelsea Market is one of six global Starbucks Reserve Roasteries, each custom designed to pay homage to the city it resides in. The New York Roastery's 23,000-square-foot espresso emporium includes five bars: two for coffee, one for cocktails, one dedicated to hand scooped, freshly roasted coffee beans, and one for serving world-renown Princi pastries.

Other major design elements include a 10-foot tall copper statue of Starbuck’s signature Siren. And just to one up themselves, the Roastery also features a 30-foot tall copper cask which holds freshly roasted coffee waiting to be sent overhead to each coffee bar. Adding some greenery to the space, you’ll find a slice of the lush vegetation with coffee plants, ferns and philodendrons commonly found in Costa Rica and brought to life in a giant living Terrarium. You can truly see the whole life cycle of coffee throughout the Roastery, all the way from plant to cup!

The Roastery has reopened with outdoor dining for the first time ever, adhering to the new safety guidelines such as spaced out tables, extra cleaning, face mask requirements, and more. Whether you’re in need of a morning coffee fix or some afternoon R&R, Starbucks Reserve Roastery is full of hidden gems you could spend your whole day discovering.

1. Outdoor Dining at the Streetside Patio

Whether you're looking to grab a drink for happy hour, a (happiest) hour long lunch, or a quick coffee, the Roastery now has a streetside patio adorned with greenery and umbrellas. The full Roastery menu is available on the patio. Our favorite for happy hour is a round of Aperol Spritz and charcuterie board for the table. Reservations not required.

2. Espresso Martini Flight at The Arriviamo Bar (Mezzanine Level)

Step up to the Arriviamo Bar with coffee and tea cocktail creations concepted by award-winning mixologist Julia Momose. Our obvious favorite: The Espresso Martini. What better spot to order an EM than a place known for producing world class coffee? Made with Starbucks Reserve® Espresso, Kalak Single Malt Vodka, Barrel-Aged Vanilla Syrup, and Dark Chocolate, it's an espresso martini of perfection with every sip. They also have an espresso martini flight tasting option, including Orange Cacao, Mole Spice, Cherry Limone. The only thing better than one espresso martini? Three.

3. Go On a Tour - New York Roastery Revealed Tour

For anyone searching for the full Roastery adventure, experiential tours are available every weekday for booking. Go on a cup-of-joe journey from farm to cup that showcases the roasting process, learn about brewing and beverage craft from one of the onsite coffee connoisseurs. One of the stars of the show? The Roastery itself, where you’ll receive an in-depth look at the unique and magnificent architectural design of the coffeehouse. Contact the Event Specialist at nycroasteryevents@starbucks.com for more info.

4. Coffee Tastings

An extension to the tour – and personally one of our favorite experiences – is the coffee tastings. We did the Coffee Master Tasting + Duo Cioccolato Truffle Pairing, where we discovered how coffee flavors are delectably enhanced when paired with chocolate. Try to find a better combination than coffee and chocolate – we’ll wait.

5. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner at Princi Cafe (Main Level)

While our corner Starbucks shop might be perfect for grab-and-go grub, the Roastery is an ideal spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner – and everything in between. Princi Bakery & Café, located on the main level, is an authentic Italian bakery that offers freshly baked Italian fare, such as pastries, paninis, pizza, pastas, salads and more.

6. Experiential Coffee Bar (Downstairs)

Fully immerse yourself in the art, science and theatre of coffee at the Experiential Coffee Bar, situated downstairs. It features unique brew methods and pairings, as well as specialty Roastery creations and brew comparison flights. It’s an engaging moment for those looking to deepen their coffee knowledge.

7. Sip Whiskey Barrel-Aged Cold Brew - nonalcoholic (Mezzanine Level)

Starbucks Reserve’s key ingredient to the most unique cold brew you'll ever taste? Whiskey barrels. The barrel-aged coffee bar showcases a variety of spirit-free coffee beverages whose beans have been carefully aged in whiskey barrels. Poured over a large block of ice, the Whiskey Barrel-Aged Cold Brew is one of the Roastery's most popular drinks, as well as one of the most unique coffees you'll ever taste. The centuries-old craft of barrel-aging has historically been used for wine and spirits. However, at the Roastery, baristas combine this process with their mastery of roasting to age green coffee beans. *Chef’s Kiss*

8. Coffee Lovers Merchandise (Main Level)

No NYC experience would be complete without an element of shopping. And the Starbucks Reserve Merchandise shop is a coffee lover's dream. Choose from exclusive NYC Roastery mugs and tumblers, apparel such as sweatshirts and t-shirts that pay homage to your love for coffee, brewing tools, and more gifts that are available only at the Roasteries.

9. Scooping Bar (Main Level)

Pick up a bag of hand-scooped Starbucks Reserve coffee roasted on-site at the Roastery and available to take home. Coffee Masters will help guide as you choose a specially packaged Starbucks Reserve™ coffee to brew and sip in your favorite mug at home each morning.
