The Best Day Trips From NYC

Trade the "concrete jungle" for some real nature. 🌳🍃🍁

Published March 29, 2022

We’re not entirely biased when we say that NYC is one of the most alluring places to live. However appealing city life in the Big Apple may be, you don’t have to be born and raised here to realize that it’s also exhausting – they don’t call it the city that never sleeps for nothing.

Sometimes you just need to replace the skyscrapers with sky-high trees (no, Central Park doesn’t count), your six-floor walk-up with a waterfall hike, and your taxi horns with, well, silence. And for those moments, we propose these awesome destinations easy enough to get to from NYC!

Hudson Valley — Beacon/Cold Spring, NY

Hudson Valley — Beacon/Cold Spring, NY

Situated just under 100 miles outside of the city is the Hudson Valley, a hotspot in recent years with everything from nature and relaxation to shopping and cozy cafes. Just one stop apart on the Metro-North are the small towns of Beacon and Cold Spring.

Activity Highlight: Visit Dia:Beacon’s vast and open space to see large-scale installations, paintings, and sculptures. After that, take a stroll down to the Cold Springs Waterfront to see its sailboat-lined marina and wide views of the Hudson River and bordering mountains.

The Hamptons, NY

The Hamptons, NY

What does the cover-up in Weekend at Bernie's and Chandler peeing on Monica's jellyfish sting in Friends have in common – aside from being complete and utter disasters? The Hamptons. If a show takes place in NYC, there's a great chance at least one episode is devoted to a trip out to this destination hot spot. So why not devote your own Saturday to visiting this gorgeous locale? While you’re there, check out a bougie vineyard or high-end spa!

Activity Highlight: If you’re looking for something a little more casual, visit the infamous Tate’s Bake Shop for their signature crispy cookies, then pop by the Surf Lodge for the perfect laid-back afternoon escape — giant flamingo drink highly encouraged!

North Fork, NY

North Fork, NY

North Fork, deemed the "Un-Hamptons," is a beautiful rural wine country with farm stands and small-town vibes. Trade your city farmer’s market for 8 Hands Farm, where you can find all the grass fed-meats and chemical-free produce your heart desires while you take in the scenic views of the scenic pastures and grazing animals. There are also plenty of wineries and breweries nearby!

Activity Highlight: If you find yourself in North Fork from May through the end of October, Lavender by the Bay – New York’s premier lavender farm – is an absolute must-see. Though the farm has a pointedly North Fork aesthetic, you’ll soon feel fully transported to the purple blooms of Provence.

Phoenicia, NY

Phoenicia, NY

This sleepy town in the heart of the Catskills will give you small-town vibes without leaving the state. Do some whitewater rafting at Town Tinker Tubing, grab some killer eats at Phoenicia Diner (which has some pretty insane views), or do a little hiking — whatever strikes your fancy!

Activity Highlight: If you didn’t get your fill of nature from the rafting, visit the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. This nonprofit has saved thousands of animals through emergency rescues – we’re talking cows, goats and pigs (oh my!) Though their weekend tours run from April to November, they host various vegan-themed culinary events throughout the entire year.
