FAQ:

Should we tip the captain & crew? How much is appropriate?
It is customary to leave a gratuity to your hired Captain/Crew. For a point of reference, it is very much like tipping a server at a restaurant (where gratuity is based on the value of the service provided). The industry standard is to leave a 15-20% gratuity based on the charter price (not to be confused with the Captain/Crew’s baseline hourly rate). Payment & gratuity can be provided directly to your hired Captain.

What should I bring?
We suggest that all parties bring their own bags of ice to keep their beverages cold. Additionally, we recommend that guests bring their own bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, food, and beverages.

Onboard we provide a complimentary cooler, full refrigerator/freezer, kitchen utensils, bottle opener, disposable cups, napkins, and disposable plates for you to use.

Where are you docked?
We are docked at 31st Street Harbor. Directions: We are located at 31st Street Harbor. The address is 3155 S. Lake Shore Dr. Chicago, IL. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure if you are dropping off, or 30 minutes prior if you plan on parking. Taxi, Uber, or Vehicle Drop offs are to be done at the 31s Street Harbor turnaround or at 31st & Lake Shore Drive.

Are infants and children allowed on board?
We do allow children on board! Please note that children do count towards the capacity total and that children 13 years and younger are required to wear a life jacket at all times. For babies and infants, we highly encourage parents to bring their own infant size life jackets.

If guests would like to use our infant size life jackets, we ask that guests please let us know in advance so that our team may put them on board prior to guest arrival.

Is there parking available?
Yes, 31st Street Harbors offers plentiful parking options for guests.

Can we go on the river?
Absolutely! While this is very common, it is important to note that all vessels must enter/leave through the Chicago Locks when traveling through the Chicago River. This can add time to your charter, especially during high traffic times like Friday & Saturday afternoons. To ensure that your charter has ample time and an enjoyable boating experience, we suggest letting the Knot My Boat Charters team and your hired Captain know that you would like to go on the Chicago River prior to your charter date.

Can we bring our own food and alcohol?
Yes, all guests are welcome to provide their own food and clear beverages. Onboard we provide a complimentary cooler, full refrigerator/freezer, kitchen utensils, bottle opener, disposable cups, napkins, and disposable plates for you to use.

For beverages, we suggest avoiding glass glass and staining liquids (like red wine, cranberry juice, etc) as they can damage the upholstery and boat interiors may result in a damage fee.

Is there a cooler or refrigerator on-board?
Yes, all of our boats provide a cooler and on-board refrigerator for your use.

Do you offer food & beverage catering?
While we are not able to provide food and beverage directly to our clients, we do have suggestions for third party vendors. Please reach out to your Knot My Boat Charters concierge for our recommended catering partners.

Can we play our own music?
Yes, all of our vessels are equipped with premium sound systems, featuring bluetooth and auxiliary input connectivity.

Can we bring our own decorations?
Prior to your charter date, Knot My Boat Charters requires that guests submit a list of all decoration items for written approval. Small items like glitter, confetti, feather boas, or open flame items (fireworks/sparklers) are not allowed. Items such as balloons and flowers are always welcome.

Please note that depending on the timing of other bookings, we cannot always guarantee that guests can arrive early and set up decorations prior to your charter start time.

Can we go swimming?
Yes, we do allow guests to go swimming! For your own safety, many captains will not allow guests to go swimming after sunset at night and/or if water conditions are unfavorable.

We encourage guests to consult with their hired captain for more information.
