No matter who you voted for or where you get your news, a very nonpartisan fact we all can agree on: Presidential pups are vital to the success of our nation. The key to success. Highlighting these famous furry friends, is The AKC Museum of the Dog’s newest exhibit.
The AKC Museum of the Dog preserves, interprets and celebrates the role of dogs in society and educates the public about the human-canine bond through its collection of art and exhibits that inspire engagement with dogs. Located in Midtown, steps from Grand Central, the museum hosts one of the finest collections of canine-related art. Combining fine arts with cutting edge technology and interpretation, the Museum of the Dog provides unique and engaging experiences for visitors of all ages.
In August, The AKC Museum of the Dog unveiled its Presidential Dogs exhibit, focusing on the influence dogs belonging to former US presidents had on trends in America and their presidency. Some artwork of note is Millie, President George H.W. Bush’s dog, Barney and Miss. Beazley, President George W. Bush’s dogs, and Bo, owned by President Barack Obama. Talk about a red, white and bark moment.
In addition to the new exhibit, there are interactive exhibits throughout the museum. These include the Meet the Breeds tables which allow you to learn about the hundreds of breeds the AKC recognizes, Find Your Match, which takes your photo and then matches you to the breed you resemble most, and Molly, the virtual service dog who you can train to do basic commands such as sit, stay, and spin. The museum also has a library and archives section filled with material dog lovers of all ages can enjoy. You’ll find breed specific books, books on dog sports, and education workshops/book readings are held in this space throughout the year.
The museum also has a gift shop that offers a variety of memorabilia ranging from books, stuffed animals, totes, mugs, t-shirts, jewelry, purses, greeting cards, and more. They’re available for purchase on site or online.
