by San Francisco Bucket List
A group of anonymous donors has made visiting San Francisco’s museums easier and more accessible for everyone. Starting this December, locals and visitors alike can visit over 20 of the area’s museums—from the Cartoon Art Museum to the California Academy of Sciences—all free of charge.
Free Museum Weekend is a new initiative that aims to “celebrate the reawakening and revitalization of a city that has long championed creativity, experimentation, and innovation.” The event highlights the city’s vibrant arts and culture organizations and will take place for the first time on December 3rd and 4th. The museum offerings will be broken up across Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday will feature museums mostly on the outskirts of the city, like the Walt Disney Family Museum in Presidio, the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, and the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. On Sunday, you can find entry to free museums closer to downtown including SFMOMA, Exploratorium, and the Asian Art Museum.
Tickets will be available to grab in person at most museums, but reserving a spot online is encouraged. There are so many impressive exhibits to see, but we’ve gathered our top three picks to get you started:
- Glow: The Art of Light at the Exploratorium.
- The rainforest at the California Academy of Sciences. Tickets to the museum need to be reserved separately on their website, and will be available the week of November 14.
- The Making of the Jungle Book at The Walt Disney Family Museum. Tickets to the museum need to be reserved separately on their website, and will be available the week of November 14.
Note: To see the most up-to-date event info, we recommend looking at each museum's individual website. If RSVP's are closed online, a limited amount of tickets will be available onsite on the day of the event (subject to building capacity requirements).
