What’s Yuzu Day?
Yuzu Day is a cultural observance in Japan, officially established by Kochi Prefecture— one of the country’s leading producers of yuzu. It’s celebrated every year on November 23rd, a date chosen for its playful wordplay: in Japanese, 11 (ichi-ichi) and 23 (fu-mi) together sound like “ii fu-mi,” which means “good flavor.” The day honors the rich aroma and unique taste of yuzu, as well as its deep cultural roots in Japanese life.
Yuzu is more than just a citrus fruit in Japan—it holds a special place in seasonal traditions. During the winter solstice, there’s a long-standing custom of taking a yuzu bath, where whole fruits are floated in hot water. This ritual is believed to help ward off illness, invite good fortune, and symbolically cleanse the body and spirit as the seasons change.
Yuzu Day is both a celebration of seasonal wellness and a reminder of how deeply food, nature, and culture are intertwined in Japanese life.
