A Glowing “Field of Light” is Coming to Manhattan’s East Side
Manhattan’s East River waterfront is about to get a major glow-up. ✨

by New York Bucket List
A new public art installation comprised of 17,000 color-changing glowing lights is coming to Freedom Plaza on Manhattan’s East Side. The project, titled “Field of Light,” was conceived by Bruce Munro, an English-Australian artist who has created similar installations all over the world in places like South Korea, Arizona, Denmark, and Australia.
“Field of Light” will span six acres from 38th to 41st Street east of First Avenue, in front of the United Nations Headquarters. The lights are stemmed, fiberoptic spheres powered entirely by solar energy, and their hues will slowly shift color, creating an ever-changing ethereal landscape. Paths and walking trails will wind through the installation, allowing visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the interactive exhibit.
Munro’s installation is just one piece of a major development project planned for Midtown East. A proposition for a large entertainment district is underway and includes a new casino, hotel, two apartment towers, a performance venue, and even a Ferris wheel. There are also plans for a museum focused on democracy that will include exhibits that highlight human rights and freedom of speech. Along with the completion of the East Midtown Waterfront, Manhattan’s East Side is in for a major transformation in the near future.
“Freedom of Light” will open this winter and be on view for 12 months. No tickets or reservations are required; visitors are welcome to explore the installation free of charge. Munro hopes the project will “warm hearts and inspire both young and old to take from it and create something of their own to pass on to others.”
